Edenvale Regional Hospital

Edenvale hospital is regional hospital in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The hospital is conveniently surrounded by vast array of amenities such as smalls, gyms, parks and restaurant. But beware, cable theft is prevalent at this hospital and as result, the residents living in the doctor’s quarter’s have experienced power cuts that rival Stage 4 load shedding itself. Below we give an overview of the hospital as well as some pro’s and con’s for you to consider. Although we update this information regularly, new developments and special circumstances may render some of the information outdated. So take it with a pinch of salt.

Working Experience

Supervision rating: 6/10

The level of supervision can differ based on the rotation you’re in, your supervising doctor’s and the workload. As such the supervision rating here should be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless the information provided is based on interviews, and reports from staff working at the hospital. At Edenvale, a team may consist of Comm serve doctor’s , medical Officers, a registrar (although less frequently), and a consultant. In such a hospital, Interns are expected to be able to assess and manage most cases independently by the end of the rotation. Ofcourse there is always assistance but the uncomplicated nature of many of the cases as well as the sheer work load, make it impractical to review every patient with a senior.

Hospital conditions rating: 7/10

We won’t lie to you and act like this not a public hospital. But the favourable rating is assessed in context with other hospitals. The infrastructure is fairly good.

Efficiency: 6/10

Working efficiency considers the use of modern technology in the working environment as well the efficiency of systems in place. Unfortunately this hospital is not well equipped with computers or WiFi. Which means you’ll have to budget your own money to pay for things like data, and lab-track code scanner subscriptions. The retrieval of imaging is done manually meaning that you may have to physically fetch printed out X-rays and CT scans on CD’s as opposed to just searching for results on a computer.

EP index: 7/10

This is the experience to paper-pushing ratio. The higher the score, the more practical exposure you’re likely to enjoy. Another way to look at it, is that a high score indicates that you will be forced to take more independence when assessing and managing patients. This practical experience may come at the cost of less academic exposure. The score takes into consideration the level of are at the hospital and expected intern duties.

DQ rating: 4/10

For R900 a month, you pay for what you get. Some of the issues include power cuts and cable theft, poor maintenance, broken doors, lack of amenities on campus.
